Mount Stuart House, a spectacular Victorian Gothic house, is the architectural fantasy of the 3rd Marquess of Bute (1847-1900) and the Scottish architect Robert Rowand Anderson. Inside, the sheer amount of stained glass and Italian marble is breathtaking

The gardens, 300 acres of designed landscape, surround the main house. Including - of course! - some large rhododendron shrubs like this purple and red one

Opposite the main entrance, the Rock Garden by Thomas Mawson represents the most ambitious of his commissions for the 3rd Marquess.

To create the pools and streams, water is piped in stone conduits over a distance of more than 2 km
